Additional Information

In 1871, Dwight Cutler constructed Cutler House on the southwest corner of Washington and Third Streets. This majestic five-story building, done in the Second Empire style, was one of the finest around, and ranked among the most popular hotels in the state. It could accommodate 300 guests, and visitors were impressed by its size and beauty.

A disastrous fire in 1889 destroyed about 50 businesses and homes in a five-block area of  Grand Haven, including the Cutler House Hotel. The citizens of Grand Haven began immediately to rebuild, and a second, smaller, new Cutler House opened in 1891. This L-shaped building with its broad veranda along Third Street, represented all that was the best and most progressive in the hotel world of the day.

The Western Union office was here, and the lobby was furnished with easy chairs and many potted plants. The 150-guest dining room was furnished in oak with tasteful decorations, fine white linens, sparkling glassware, and shining silver. In the basement there were sample rooms, a barbershop, bathrooms, and a first-class cafe. The upper part of the building was reached by a broad, massive oak staircase. The bedrooms were furnished in cherry and oak, with velvet carpets. In the summer months an orchestra played both popular and classical music throughout the evening. The hotel closed permanently about 1914, when Beaudry's Department Store opened at this corner site.

In 1976, the building was acquired by lifelong resident Gerry A. Witherell. During recent years it has  provided a place of commerce to many  local retailers and small businesses. In 2006, Witherell, along with developer Michael C. Miller, formed Cutler House Condominiums. This quality renovation will yield nine distinct residences, each with its own personality and style. Spacious floor plans have been  carefully designed to take  advantage of the building's  timeless characteristics and charm. Many original features such as wood floors and exposed brick walls will coexist with the new windows, entrance, elevator and mechanical systems.

Cutler House Condominiums represents an exciting new chapter in the life of this  strong and relevant structure. Living downtown at Cutler House will be comfortable  and convenient - the perfect place to call home within the vibrant community of Grand Haven.
